Deck the halls with balls of sprinkles! Fa la la la la la la la la. Okay, so that’s not exactly how the song goes. But you’ll definitely want to include these cute sprinkle ornaments on your tree this year! Festive and easy to customize, they’d also make a great stocking stuffer for the baker in your life.
Note: I originally wrote this post for Sprinkle Pop. They compensated me for my time and generously provided me with these adorable jimmies.
What You’ll Need:
12 clear, round plastic ornaments, about 2.5 inches in diameter
high gloss varnish, like the brand pictured below
Sprinkle Pop Classic Christmas jimmies
Sprinkle Pop Grinchy jimmies
a funnel
wooden sticks for stirring
teaspoon set you don’t mind getting glue on
empty sprinkle bottles or small plastic cups
Let’s talk about the varnish. The Envirotex Lite Pour-On High Gloss Finish worked like a charm, so I recommend using that. You can find it at Michael’s and probably at Hobby Lobby. If all else fails there’s always Amazon! It comes with two bottles, and you need to use both. Pour 1 1/2 teaspoons of each bottle into an ornament. Stir the varnish around with a wooden stick (I used wooden skewers) for two minutes. Then gently swirl the ornament around to coat the sides. Turn the ornament upside down and let the varnish drain into an empty sprinkle container or small plastic cup for 30 minutes. I varnished four ornaments at a time, but you can do more if you have enough draining containers.
After 30 minutes, measure out 2 tablespoons of sprinkles. Jimmies and nonpareil sprinkles work the best. The easiest way to pour them into the ornament is through a funnel. Pour the sprinkles in, and gently swirl them around to cover the sides. Shake out any excess sprinkles (but leaving them inside doesn’t hurt anything either).
Let the sprinkles set before putting the top of the ornament on. I waited 24 hours, but a few hours is probably fine.
And that’s it! Add ribbon if desired and hang them on the tree, or display them in a bowl. Just have fun with it!
