This paint splatter cake stand is so simple to make and adds a fun pop of color to your dessert displays! I bought a plain white porcelain cake stand from Crate & Barrel, but any white ceramic cake stand will work. You can also use any combination of paint colors. My stand is inspired by fall colors, but this would also be pretty in pastels and the colors of the rainbow.
What You’ll Need:
white ceramic cake stand
several small paint brushes
sponge paint brush
several colors of acrylic paint
high gloss finish (check the label and make sure it’s suitable for ceramics)
cup of water (for dirty paint brushes)
wax paper
paper towels
rubber gloves (optional)
Start by decorating the bottom of the cake stand. Place it upside-down on a large piece of wax paper so you don’t make a mess while splattering the paint. Dip a small brush into the first paint color and use your finger to gently flick the brush, splattering it on the cake stand. Wear rubber gloves if you don’t want to get paint all over your hands.
Repeat with the rest of the paint colors until you’re satisfied with the splatter.
Wait several hours for the paint to dry. Then use a sponge brush to gently apply a coat of high gloss finish. Wait another two to three hours before applying a second coat.
Once the bottom is completely dry repeat the splattering process on the top of the stand.
Again, apply two coats of high gloss finish, giving the stand plenty of time to dry in between coats.
Don’t place any food directly on the finished cake stand. Be sure cakes are on a cake board and cupcakes are wrapped. Spot clean only.
